Choosing a Muffler by Sound: Deep Rumble, Raspy Bark or Quiet and Smooth
Most people describe the exhaust sound they want with their hands and a few noises before they find the words. That's perfectly fine with us. Choosing a muffler really comes down to what you want to hear, and there are a few main styles that shape that sound.
Chambered mufflers send the exhaust through a series of walls and rooms inside the muffler. They tend to give that classic, aggressive muscle-car rumble that you can feel at a stoplight. They're a favorite for trucks and V8s when the owner wants people to know they're coming.
Straight-through mufflers let the exhaust flow in a mostly straight line through a perforated tube wrapped in sound-absorbing packing. They usually sound smoother and deeper at cruising speed, with a sharper bark when you step on the gas. Many drivers like them because they're louder when you want it and calmer when you don't.
Turbo-style and factory-style mufflers are built to keep things quiet. They're the right choice when you simply need a replacement that sounds like the original, or when you want a mild improvement without disturbing the neighbors.
We carry well-known brands like Flowmaster, MagnaFlow, Borla, Dynomax and Walker, and each one has its own character within these styles. Two mufflers that look nearly identical on a shelf can sound very different on your vehicle. That's why we like to talk with you about what you have in mind and, when we can, play you examples of how different setups sound.
The same muffler can also sound different depending on your engine, your pipe size and where the exhaust exits. That's part of the reason we build systems to fit your vehicle instead of guessing.
